The AI Buzz has been Growing and Growing.
One of the Areas that it has been gaining Momentum is as a Workforce.
Not "In" the Workforce.
"As" a Workforce.
As Marc Benioff has called it...
A "Limitless Workforce".
This seems to be how many Leaders are Looking and Hoping to Utilize AI.
Many of these Organizations have been Struggling, for years, with their Workforce.
Costs have been Going Up.
Productivity has been Going Down.
Leaders have been pushing their Workforce Harder and Harder without getting the Results they Hoped.
Some have tried Pleading.
Others have tried Intimidation.
Laying Down the Law.
Dictating from their Ivory Towers.
With No Results.
The Shareholders have Demands, and Leaders are on the Hook for Results...
Or Else.
So, Leaders are Turning to Anyone and Anything for a Glimpse of Hope.
At first, it was the Cry of the "Serendipity of Ideas" Myth...
Doomed from the Beginning and Without had a Single Recorded Success that I've heard of.
Now, the Loudest Voices are Screaming about the Future of Artificial Intelligence.
If you cannot get Employees to Run Your Organization, You Do Not Need Employees!
Just get AI Agents!
They Do Not Need to be Paid (though the Companies that own the Servers they Run Off Do).
They Never get Sick.
They Never need to Stop.
You can have them Built Exactly as You Want!
The "Perfect Fit" for Your Needs!
Except...
Perhaps there is an Inherent Problem with this Belief.
A few days ago, I discussed the Challenges that Leaders Face with Filling Key Roles.
Essentially, even before bringing someone onto a Team, we begin to Create a Hole in the Organization that can "Only" be Filled by a Cog.
The Cog that makes the Machine Work.
But the Obvious Problem with this is that Humans Never Have, and Never Will, be Cogs.
Every Time you try to fit a Human "Into" the Cog-Shaped Hole, it is a Recipe for Disaster.
They Never Fit into the Cog-Shaped Hole, which "Wears" Down the Machine, and then either the Human or the other "Pieces" around the Human Break...
Which we call Burnout in Today's Business World.
This is where we Find Ourselves Today.
Burnout has Spread to Over 80% of the Workforce, and it Will Continue to get Worse with How Today's Businesses are Designed.
But this is Where AI puts itself into an Interesting Position...
A Human is Unable to Fit into a Cog-Shaped Hole...
But...
An AI Agent?
In Theory, you can shape the AI Agent into "Anything" that You Need.
Including in the Shape of a Cog to Fit into Your Cog-Shaped Hole!
Seems like the Perfect Solution...
Right?
Well, Here is where Reality Blows Up the Fantasy.
Specifically, Two Aspects of Reality.
The first is that AI Agents are Still Extremely Problematic, and All of the Current Hard Data around AI seems to point out that there are No Real "Leaps" in AI Advancement coming soon.
People are Talking a "Very" Large Talk, but the Results are Incredibly Lacking.
If someone proves me wrong, then Great, but I have not been Impressed with the Capabilities of AI to date (Outside of getting some Great Laughs).
Plus, I'm not the only individual who Sees the Problems with AI.
Even those who "Create" and "Manage" AI Agents have the Same Experience.
CEO Tatyana Mamut of Wayfound put it like this...
"It feels a lot like managing a team of interns, who are book smart but still make frustrating mistakes on the job..."
Do you really want your "Entire" Oganization Run by "Interns" who continuously make "Frustrating Mistakes on the Job"?
Intelligence is Good.
But AI completely Lacks what is Needed...
Wisdom.
It is Why I have been Completely Unable to Use AI in "Any" of my Work outside of Gaining Basic Knowledge (which is still often Wrong).
So, what will Organizations "Need" if they Use "AI Interns" throughout their Organization?
Babysitters.
The More "AI Interns"?
The More Babysitters.
But this leads us to our Second Problem, which is made Exponentially Worse by the Requirement of "AI Intern" Babysitters...
AI is Not Currently Capable of Creativity.
AI is Not Currently Capable of Innovation.
What Leaders "Need" from their Workforce?
Is "Not Possible" with AI Interns.
This is Further Made Worse because, with an AI Workforce that Grows and Runs Full Time...
It Will Need More and More "AI Intern" Babysitters, working to make sure that a Hallucination or Misinformation doesn't Blow Up into a Full Catastrophe...
Which Prevents the "Humans" who are doing the Babysitting from doing what they are Excellent At...
Creativity and Innovation.
Plus, the Leaders who are Determining what the "Cogs" Need to "Look" like are "So Far" Detached from the Reality of those Positions...
That those Cogs will Not get the Needed Results.
AI Interns are "Not" the Solution that Organizations Need.
Could "Output" be Increased with AI Interns?
Absolutely.
But if the AI Interns Output Junk and Problems, which both AI and Interns are Infamous for, the You just get Junk and Problems "Faster".
Which is Not Productivity.
It is Wasted Time, Energy, and Money.
This is a Result No One Wants.
Now, will AI have a Place in the Businesses of the Future?
Probably, especially as forcefully as the Tech is being Pushed.
But the Real "Problem" that Leaders are Facing is Not the "Workforce".
This is Why AI Interns will "Never" be the Needed Solution.
What do Leaders Need?
A New Business Model.
The Current Model is Broken, and that is Why we are Seeing these Problems.
Pushing the Model Further, Faster, is only going to Create Faster Collapse.
Catastrophic Collapse if AI is Used.
The Future is Not Created on a Broken Foundation.
It is Time to Create a Real Future.
