Written by a human, for humans, always.
There are 100 days left in the year.
Now, most people will look at that...
And think about how the beginning of the year has gone...
Believing that the rest of the year will likely go similarly.
If the beginning of the year was good...
They will expect to ride that out to the end of the year...
Coast...
And try to improve further starting in the next year.
If the beginning of the year was bad...
They will expect the rest of the year to be similar...
Coast...
And try again starting in the next year.
Here is the problem...
Habits.
What you do over a period of time...
Tends to be what you continue to do.
The longer you do that action...
The harder the habit becomes to break.
At the psychophysiological level...
The body optimizes energy (Mg-ATP) to continue strategies that are considered "working"...
And when push comes to shove...
Our bodies default and subconsciously drive us to continue that behavior...
Even if we logically know there are better paths.
What this means...
Is that if you coast for the next 100 days...
You will most likely coast going into the next year.
This is a large part of the reason that so many people struggle to ever change their lives.
The coast where they are...
Until they decide there is an "opportune" time to change...
Then try to enact their change...
But become overridden by their habits...
Causing them to not change...
Reverting to their coasting behavior until the next "opportune" time...
Living in a vicious cycle where nothing changes...
And...
Often becoming worse over time.
But...
There is another option.
Begin with small change.
What is possible in 100 days?
Well, let's assume that the goal is to become 1% better each day you work toward something.
We will assume that any day you do not act toward the goal, you become 1% worse because there is no such thing as stagnation.
(Note - This is why it is always recommended to practice something more days than not to practice something. Skills decay without use.)
So...
If most people work toward their goals every weekday, and take the weekend off completely...
You have 72 weekdays and 28 weekend days left in the year.
If we turn it into an equation (I'll do the math; you can verify if you'd like)...
Where 1.00 is where you started, 1.01 is 1% better, and .99 is 1% worse
Your skill will become (1.01^72)*(.99^28) = 1.545...
Or improve by 54.5%.
That is right...
Just by focusing on weekdays, you can become over 50% better at something before the end of the year!
(Note - becoming "better" at something might not appear the same for everyone under every circumstance based on a variety of variables. 50% better at basketball will look "very" different between a brand new player and someone already playing in the NBA. You may see it more easily with the new player, but for the NBA player, though subtle, it may be significantly more impactful.)
Now...
Let's take this a step further...
What if instead of every weekday...
You work on becoming better at something every single day?
Your skill will become 1.01^100 = 2.705...
Or improve by 170.5%.
This is the value of compound interest...
And why having the right habits in our lives often becomes a significant differentiator.
A 28-day difference may not seem like much...
But over time it becomes a drastically large gap.
Over that 100-day period...
That is a nearly 120% difference in skill.
But...
We can actually take this even a step further...
Because 1% is an assumed baseline of growth...
But...
If we look at psychophysiology...
Flow states can drastically improve our results.
How much?
The flow research indicates we become 5x more productive in flow states than the "average" person...
(Note - Today's workforce average is drastically becoming consumed in burnout, and the research on burnout suggests that a person in burnout is 4x "less" productive than the "average" person, so this gap will actually widen significantly compared to the true workforce average)...
So for our purposes...
If "average" is defined as a 1% improvement...
Someone in flow could easily attain a 5% improvement.
Attain this every single day consistently...
Your skill will become 1.05^100 = 131.501...
Or improve by 13,050.1%.
(Note - this may seem crazy, but again recall that improvements look vastly different at higher levels and become more subtle. However, the results speak for themselves when push comes to shove).
There is a reason that some people appear to drastically make leaps in their lives...
While others barely seem to move.
When you improve the right things in your life...
Consistently...
With your psychophysiology aligned with your goals...
100 days can make vast differences.
This is why you should not coast at the end of the year.
So many people fail to understand the value of one day...
Especially in the long term.
Most people see the past 265 days and write off the remaining 100 days...
Assuming that things will likely look similar...
Not because they should be...
But because their past habits have been the only evidence of what 100 days can accomplish.
However...
Most people's habits are not working in their favor...
And are actively detracting from their lives...
Causing them to live well below their potential.
But...
If you take the next 100 days...
And simply work a little bit toward your goals...
You'll be vastly closer than most people realize.
Dedicate a part of every day toward those goals...
And you'll get there even faster.
Align your psychophysiology with what you're looking to accomplish...
Then you'll achieve things that most people believe are impossible.
