Written by a human, for humans, always.
Everyone has a reason that they want to succeed at something.
Sometimes the reasons are good...
But most of the time...
They are not.
Of the many wrong reasons one can give to want to succeed...
There is one that has a particular sting to it.
Why?
When it is your reason to succeed...
You will discover that you will become dissatisfied at every turn...
And worse...
It will cause every success you have to feel hollow...
Worthless...
And will create a vicious cycle in your life where you will continue to seek successes...
That always leave you feeling this way.
What is that reason to succeed?
The desire to succeed so that you no longer struggle in life.
Now...
Can you succeed in order to struggle "less" in life?
Maybe.
There are three flaws in this reason that will cause your successes to wither before you.
The first...
Is that it is a fact of life...
That you will struggle somewhere.
Even when you think that you have everything figured out...
Everything taken care of...
Without a single thing you can imagine will go wrong...
You will discover...
100% of the time...
Life will find something that will go wrong.
I discovered just this morning how true that is...
When a toilet overflowed in the house, causing water to overflow through half the house.
Such is life.
But it is worse...
Because when your goal is to succeed so that you no longer struggle...
And you lose...
Again...
And again...
And again...
And again...
It becomes disheartening.
You are playing a game that is impossible to win...
And we, as humans, hate to perpetually lose.
Each loss...
Makes the success feel like failure...
Destroying the perceived value of the success gained...
Causing you to chase the next...
And the next...
And the next...
But always finding yourself dissatisfied with every success...
Considering it another failure...
Hollow.
There are many people who fall into this horribly vicious cycle...
Repeating it into madness.
The second flaw...
Is that as you succeed more and more...
The greater opportunities one generally gains access to...
With greater resources...
But most importantly, that most people fail to see...
Are greater consequences.
What this means...
Is that as you succeed higher...
Your struggles do not tend to minimize...
They tend to become larger...
Hurt more deeply...
And impact us at a more significant level.
Each level of success a further hope that it will be the one to remove struggle...
Each level of success a further disappointment, bringing only larger struggles...
The consequences only becoming exponentially larger.
There is still the third flaw...
And it has to do with Flow States.
See...
We, as humans, perform and feel our best...
When we are in the psychophysiological state of Flow.
If we want to truly succeed at the highest of levels...
This is the state that we need to get into.
But...
There is something that is known as the Flow Cycle...
A process that you must consistently go through...
Again...
And again...
And again...
If we are going to obtain higher and higher levels of success.
Now, do you want to know what the four steps to the Flow Cycle are?
Struggle...
Release...
Flow...
And recovery.
Do you see what is at the very beginning of the Flow Cycle?
Struggle.
But you need to understand what it actually means.
You cannot get into flow without struggling...
But...
You need a certain amount of struggle.
Too little struggle and you will not be engaged enough in the task to release into Flow.
Too much struggle and you will be in too much distress to release into Flow.
Now this is the problem when your reason to succeed is to avoid struggle...
Either...
You will avoid struggle and therefore fail to get into Flow...
Which will mean that you will never perform at your best...
Or...
You will experience excessive stress due to the desire to not struggle...
Which will block you from getting into the Flow state.
Either way that you look at it...
You end up unable to truly perform at your absolute best...
Minimizing the successes that you have access to...
Living either in extreme stress or in fear of struggle.
Neither will help you escape struggle.
As you attempt to eliminate struggle...
You begin to discover that you are instead trapped by it...
Seeking to avoid the one path you must navigate through.
There are many reasons that exist to succeed...
But if the reason you have is to have no struggle...
Then any successes you have will leave you feeling dissatisfied and hollow...
Assuming you have the capacity to attain success while never being at your best.
If you truly want to obtain success in your life...
You must seek better reasons.
But be wary...
Just as the reason of having no struggle comes to haunt one...
So too do most reasons that people seek success.
