Sometimes, You simply Need the Right Lever to Change Someone's World.
But when it Comes to Psychophysiology...
Finding the Right Levers can be Tricky.
The Body is Complex.
Extremely Complex.
And For Everything that We have Discovered to this Point...
There are So Many Things that We Understand Incorrectly...
And Far More that We Know Little to Nothing About...
Yet.
In the Pursuit to Understand How to Achieve Peak Performance...
Help Individuals Overcome Burnout and Develop Sageship...
And to Unlock these Mysteries...
I Began to Study How Our Psychophysiology Works within these Complex Systems of Interdependence.
That Journey has been Incredible.
Within this Journey, lately I have been Putting a Lot of Focus...
And Emphasis...
On the Importance of the Nervous System.
It is So Incredibly Important that I began Offering what I Call ANS-Serenity Services.
Both Alongside and Separately from my Sageship Coaching Services for Leaders, Executives, Business Owners, and Entrepreneurs.
Why?
It is the ANS-wer that Leaders have been Looking For.
And the Results I've Been Seeing from Clients?
Decreased Anxiety.
Increased Emotional Regulation and Emotional Intelligence (EI or EQ).
Better Recovery and Total Sleep.
Improved Focus.
Improved Memory.
Even Weight Loss that can be "Solely" Contributed to ANS-Serenity Work.
Truly Mind-Blowing Outcomes.
But How Far can these Results Really Go?
That is a Fascinating Question which I'm Not Sure We, as a Society, have the Answer to Yet.
But...
I Can Tell You This...
In One of My Client's Lives...
It is Creating Hope in what Most would Consider a "Hopeless" Situation.
Why?
This particular Client has Non-Verbal Autism.
It Creates some Interesting Circumstances that I've had to Work With.
On Top of This...
They are an Adult...
Older than Me, and I am 32 Years Old as I Write This.
Within the World of Autism...
Most Would Consider this Client "Hopeless".
Many Practitioners take on Children because it is a Well-Known Fact that Children can "Bounce Back" Fairly Quickly...
But Once You Reach a Certain Age...
Practitioners of Many Different Modalities Give Up Hope of Change.
They Believe it is "Too Late".
Well...
I am Not a Normal Practitioner.
I have Hope.
I have Faith in God, and the Human Ability to Recover...
Even into Old Age.
And More and More Research seems to Indicate that Healing in Older Age is Very Possible...
If You Simply Understand the Root Cause of the Problems.
So, I Decided to Work with this Client.
And Three Months Ago, I Wrote an Article about Something Amazing We Discovered...
Even for this Client...
Their Ability to Recover after Significant Stressors was Phenomenal.
They had taken a Two-Week Break where they Experienced Significant Stressors...
A Different Environment...
A Different Schedule...
Different Nutrition...
This Individual Thrives on Routine, so the Extreme Changes in their Routines were Expected to Cause Significant Stress...
Which We Saw in their Health Data during that Break.
Decreases in Resting Heart Rate, Heart Rate Variability, Total Sleep, and Recovery Sleep.
These Stressors actually Dropped "Further" than from the Averages we Obtained Before Starting the Nervous System Work.
All the Health Data was "So Low" that I had Believed that I would Need to Restart the Entire Program from the Ground Up...
But I was Wrong.
Within Two Weeks, they Fully Recovered to Where they Were Before their Break...
And I'm Glad to Report that this Client has Continued to See Improvements.
Which Brings me to Today's Story with this Same Client...
This Client Recently had Another Two-Week Break...
Very Similar to the Break from Before.
What Does This Mean?
I was Expecting to See Another Drop in the Health Data.
But...
A New Question Arose...
After about Three More Months of Continued ANS-Serenity Work...
Would the Client Be Able to Handle these Expected Stressors "Better" than the Last Break?
The Hope, of Course, is that the Answer would be Yes...
That their Continued ANS-Serenity Work would Raise their Stress Threshold...
Allowing them to Better Handle and Recover from the Stressors due to the Changes in their Routines.
But...
There was No Real Way of Knowing for Certain Until the Data Came In.
And...
What the Data has Now Revealed...
Has Shocked Me Yet Again.
I Compared the Averages of their Health Data from their Last Break to the Averages of their Health Data from This Break.
This is What this Client Achieved with their ANS-Serenity Work...
A 13.58% Increase in Total Sleep.
A 57.32% Increase in Recovery Sleep (Deep Sleep Plus REM Sleep).
A 25.01% Increase in Heart Rate Variability.
The Only Stat that Went in the "Wrong" Way...
Was their Resting Heart Rate, which Increased by 2.97%...
But, when you Consider the Increase within to Context of their Increased Heart Rate Variability...
This seems to Indicate that the Client's Heart was Simply Working "Better" to Overcome the Stressors they were Experiencing, and is a Relatively Small Change.
What All of this Reveals for this Client...
Is that their Stress Threshold was Increasing...
And their Ability to Reduce their Stressors Below that Threshold so that they Could Recover Better was Also Improving.
See...
Our Stress Threshold is the Total Number of Stressors We can Handle Simultaneously.
If We are Above that Stress Threshold...
We Cannot Recover because we are in a Sympathetic Nervous System State, or what most Call "Fight-or-Flight" Mode.
We Can Only Recover Properly when we Drop Below the Stress Threshold into a Parasympathetic Nervous System State, or what most Call "Rest-and-Digest" Mode.
So, if You are in Fight-or-Flight Mode...
Your Total Sleep Generally Decreases...
Your Recovery Sleep Generally Decreases...
And Your HRV Generally Decreases.
But...
If you Get into a Rest-and-Digest Mode...
The Opposite Generally Happens.
And that is What We Saw with this Client.
Their Total Sleep, Recovery Sleep, and HRV All Increased...
Quite Dramatically...
Which Indicates a Significantly Higher Stress Threshold...
And an Improved Ability to Successfully Drop Below that Stress Threshold.
All from an Individual who would be Considered "Hopeless" by Most Practitioners.
The More I look at the Results from this Client...
The More I Believe that there is Indeed Great Hope and Potential for Them.
How Far They Can Go?
Only Time will Tell.
But Seeing the Current Improvements Makes Me Excited to See How Far We Can Go.
