Have you ever noticed...
That some people always seem to get opportunities...
But others...
Seem to never get any that they hope for?
You see this happen in every industry that exists.
But what many people do not understand...
Is why?
Why is it that some individuals struggle...
While others appear to get them seemingly with ease?
The reason...
Is that most people fail to understand opportunity.
How they work.
How they develop.
Think of it like a gap in a canyon.
Most people believe that someone else will come along...
Create and lower a bridge across the gigantic chasm...
And simply allow them to walk across the canyon.
Here's the problem with the belief...
Why should the other person go out of their way to create and lower a bridge?
When it comes to opportunity...
Most people are so consumed with why "they" believe "they" should get opportunities...
But fail to see how others generally have no specific or known reason to provide an opportunity...
Or not a strong enough one to create and lower the bridge.
There are usually too many unknowns for those who have opportunities to justify the risk.
Who are you?
What differentiates you from any other person they look at?
How much differentiation do you have?
What evidence do you have of what you can do?
Is that evidence just your word?
How can they verify you are good for your word?
Have you documented proof that you can handle opportunities of similar sizes?
How did they go?
With all of this...
Do they even know you exist?
How do they know?
There are 8 billion people around the world...
How is someone supposed to both find and distinguish you from among all those other individuals?
If all things are absolutely equal, you have a 0.0000000125% chance of being seen.
The problem here, though...
Is that not all things are equal...
And there are ways to dramatically increase your ability to be seen...
Many of which others never take hold of.
One that most people know...
Is education.
If you can show you have attained a higher level of education...
It can separate you from others.
The problem with this specific one, however...
Is that a greater number of people have obtained education.
When everyone has something...
It becomes a baseline expectation as opposed to a differentiator.
You can, of course, go to higher and higher levels of education...
But what often happens is that, unless you have extremely unique knowledge that is difficult to obtain, discovered yourself, and/or highly sought...
Is that higher education becomes less and less valuable.
It "can" distinguish you from others...
But only to a small level that does not create enough movement in comparison to the costs.
What else helps?
Experience.
This is where people have the largest failure, though...
Because they fall into this trap...
They see experience as a chicken-or-egg problem.
If they cannot be given an opportunity, then how can they get experience?
It sounds logical from an outside perspective...
But fails to account for one very important thing...
Autonomy.
The ability to move yourself.
See...
The chicken-or-egg dilemma in opportunities is only a dilemma...
If you are passive...
Failing to use your own autonomy.
This is itself a problem...
Because most people who have opportunities to give...
Are looking for people who are not passive.
They want individuals who are active and willing to do what they need to do to get results.
So...
If you have no experience to show...
This nearly always reduces your ability to obtain opportunities.
So...
How do you overcome this?
You create your own opportunities.
Any experience is better than no experience...
So go make experience for yourself.
Do not make any excuses.
Do what you are able to with whatever resources you currently have.
It does not have to be perfect...
It does not need to be pretty...
But it does need to show what you are capable of.
There is another aspect that many people fail to have when it comes to opportunity...
Imagination.
How?
One thing that I have noticed with many people...
Is that they "are" given opportunities...
Just not the specific opportunities they were looking for.
They see a legitimate opportunity...
Then pass it up for any number of reasons.
"It doesn't look right".
"It seems like a scam".
"It is not what I want to do".
"It is a different industry".
I have seen opportunities pass by others for all of these different reasons...
And the result?
These individuals miss every opportunity they have access to...
While the ones they are waiting for never come.
But...
You can get experience...
By becoming creative with whatever opportunities you do have access to...
Especially when they are less than ideal.
See...
If you can take something that most would consider nothing or useless...
And you turn it into something valuable...
That is a skill that few people demonstrate...
Making you vastly more valuable than most.
With this...
Often, when you prove yourself in an opportunity...
You begin to have the ability to shift your positioning within that opportunity...
Then, in that shift, begin to create what you were hoping to move into.
When you combine all three of these together...
Highly valuable education, experience, and imagination...
What you will begin to discover...
Is that opportunities begin to come more and more easily.
People become more willing to create and lower bridges to you...
Because they see why it is valuable to them to do so.
This is why you will see some individuals seem to always get opportunities.
It is because everyone "sees" that they are worth giving the opportunity to...
So they get the opportunities first.
Only when they deny the opportunity...
Do others get a chance.
But here is what you need to understand...
There are more opportunities than there are people to fill them.
Not all of them are visible...
Sometimes there are prerequisites to being considered...
Sometimes it requires you to get your foot in the door with specific people or groups...
But those opportunities are waiting.
The question is whether you will figure out a way to begin crossing the gap yourself.
