The Ecosystem Problem In Our Lives - Understanding The Macro And Micro Impact Of How We Live As Individuals

Written by a human, for humans, always.

There is a great value in learning to understand ourselves.

Our identities (because we all hold multiple identities in different contexts).

Our values.

Our strengths.

Our fears.

Our struggles.

All of these have benefits to learning, understanding, developing, cultivating, weakening, resolving, and eliminating, depending on the context.

All valuable.

At the same time...

There is a great limitation with looking at the world in this manner.

It is, itself, a form of narcissism.

It is all about "me", "myself", and "I".

But this is inherently the problem with that focus in life...

No aspect of being human is inherently individual.

Regardless of whether you look at the greater picture or the smaller picture of ourselves...

We are always part of a system.

If we look at the greater, or macro, picture...

We find that we are a part of a community, great or small, often multiple communities.

If we look at the smaller, or micro, picture...

We discover that we have multiple microorganisms that inhabit our bodies...

All absolutely necessary for our own survival...

All of which have their own systems of functioning.

We are not individuals in the micro nor the macro.

We are parts of an ecosystem.

This, however, is not how most people think or interact in the world...

Becoming the Ecosystem Problem.

When we do not think about ourselves within an ecosystem...

At the micro or macro levels...

It often leads to problems.

When we eat without considering what impact it will have on the microorganisms that live within our bodies...

We end up destroying our inner ecosystem...

Which inadvertently destroys what is possible in our own lives.

When certain strains of microorganisms are decimated...

We lose the ability to gain certain essential nutrients in the body...

Other strains of microorganisms spread and cause further harm...

And we become miserable, sick, and worse in the process.

When we act without considering what impact it will have on the community, culture, and world around us...

We also end up destroying our outer ecosystem...

We inadvertently destroy the lives of others around us...

We begin to lose access to opportunities and our potential within the greater context of the world...

People willing to use and abuse us begin to move into our lives, causing further harm...

And we become miserable, sick, and worse in the process.

Perhaps interestingly in some contexts...

And horrifying in other contexts...

Is the old principle...

As above, so below.

If the macro ecosystem begins to decay...

Our micro ecosystem also decays.

When our micro ecosystem decays...

So does our macro ecosystem.

People make choices because they believe that it sounds good for them immediately...

Without considering the larger impact those decisions create in the overall ecosystem...

And when the ecosystem decays...

They fail to see how their decisions created that ecosystem...

Because they are so focused only on themselves as individuals...

While being completely unaware of the ecosystem around them.

Even as you read this...

I know the majority of people are being used and abused in ways they are completely unaware of...

Being targeted, their own personal desires being used against them...

Such as when a politician uses virtue signalling to convince you to vote for them, or uses emotional naming of projects and laws...

All to get you to not pay attention to how those will negatively impact the greater ecosystem...

All for the gain of the politician at your expense.

Some of the most beautiful-sounding titles presented...

Have some of the most devious plans hiding just underneath them, which destroy people's lives.

All of that...

Is just a singular example of the Ecosystem Problem at play.

If we want to have better lives...

We need to stop thinking of ourselves solely as individuals.

Yes...

We have identities, values, strengths, fears, struggles, and more as individuals...

But we need to go beyond that and see ourselves...

Every single one of these aspects of ourselves...

Within the greater context of the various ecosystems we exist within...

And we need to consider how we act and interact...

Both at the individual level and simultaneously at the various ecosystem levels.

Things that appear to serve us on an individual level...

May have horrible consequences at the micro or macro level that come to haunt us on the individual level.

Things that appear to serve the micro or macro level at the expense of the individual level...

Also have horrible consequences that come to haunt us at the micro and macro levels.

You cannot truly separate these.

The individual is a part of the ecosystem...

The ecosystem is a part of the individual.

These are not separate...

Meaning...

We need to think of these together...

Unified.
