Progress Or Madness? Two Types Of Results From Extreme Consistency

Progress Or Madness? Two Types Of Results From Extreme Consistency

Written by a human, for humans, always.

I received an email earlier today.

It came from an organization that I used to be deeply passionate about...

And they are an organization that helped me at a very early stage of my career...

Filled with good people.

I certified with the organization...

Then continued to get to higher levels of certification.

3 Years that I had spent going through the processes...

Before I got to a point where I was waiting...

And waiting...

For a new program or offering to build myself further...

And simply couldn't wait any more to continue my own growth.

That was about 5 years ago.

There was something odd that I felt when I read the email, though.

It felt like...

Absolutely nothing changed.

The same messages...

The same type of work produced...

The same goals...

All of it was...

The same.

It was the same type of work that I was interested in understanding and learning when I was earlier in my career...

But also...

The same work that I walked away from after 2 years of living in what felt like walking in a circle...

Realizing that there was nothing new coming for the foreseeable future...

And 5 years after deciding to walk away on a different path...

I see that I was right to walk away.

That organization is still going in that same circle.

Something that struck me as I read their email, though...

Is that highly consistent work can create two types of results.

See...

If you have followed my work...

You'll know that I am a fan of being extremely consistent.

I have been writing daily articles for over 1,300 days in a row...

And running a mile or more daily for over 800 days in a row.

Many people see that as an amazing accomplishment...

And perhaps it is.

It is also what has allowed me to make so much progress in my own work over the past few years.

My business dramatically changed for the better by becoming extremely consistent.

The growth I have experienced would not have been possible without this level of consistency.

Here is the caveat...

As impressive as those numbers may sound...

The organization that I received the email from...

Has leaders in their organization with even higher levels of consistency...

Things they have done daily...

Over longer periods of time.

But...

Their organization has not had the same type of growth that I have experienced.

Their extreme consistency...

Has followed the same circle that I walked away from years ago.

Instead of progress forward...

They are moving on the same path...

Over and over.

What some might describe...

As madness.

Doing the exact same things...

But not getting any further results.

Extreme consistency can lead to either result...

Progress or madness...

True progress or being in a productivity pretense.

I have lived in both.

I was living in that productivity pretense for 3 years of certification work with that organization...

I have been living in over 3 years of true progress in my organization today.

Doing something consistently does not automatically mean you will grow into something greater.

Do you need extreme consistency to grow into something greater?

Absolutely.

But consistency alone does not accomplish it.

5 years since I felt that I needed to walk away from that organization for my own growth...

5 years later, I see how right I was to walk away.

If I had stayed...

It would have been 5 years of following a circle and ending up exactly where I had been...

5 years of madness.

So...

What is the difference then?

Between extreme consistency that leads to madness...

And extreme consistency that ends up leading to true progress?

Change.

Over time, things should continue to change for the better.

Models should improve.

Ideas should expand.

Life should become better.

There will still be challenges and struggles...

Periods where you feel like you're in a rut and desperate to feel change...

But eventually...

Something should click...

Followed by the change toward what is next in the progress.

What you are building and creating now...

Should feel and be perceived as different and better than what you were building and creating then.

It should not just feel like more of the same.

More does not mean greater...

You can have more of the same.

Greater means greater...

And you want more that is greater.

Extreme consistency can lead to either result...

And extreme consistency is needed to hit the greatest heights...

But be wary...

That your extreme consistency creates true progress...

And not madness.
