Written by a human, for humans, always.
One of the concepts that I have become obsessed with over the years is...
Sageship.
Within the professional context of Sageship is the drive to push the boundaries of an industry beyond where it lies today.
What this means...
Is that sometimes you begin to understand things and see the world in such a way...
That others are not fully understanding of.
What you will see happen...
Is someone might ask about what you do...
And you explain what your work consists of...
But as you discuss certain ideas and aspects of the work...
You discover that they do not really "get" it.
People might often see this with a client who is not trained in the specific area...
But a Sage will experience it within their own industry.
As an example, you can think about how Einstein theorized about different aspects of physics...
Who had some theories that were not accepted for a decade within his industry...
And other theories that took a century to prove.
That is the type of boundary pushing I mean when I am talking about Sageship.
Now...
If you are a true Sage in an industry...
That will become the norm of what you experience overall in an industry.
But...
Sometimes...
You might discover someone who is also a Sage in their own right...
In the same industry, or perhaps an adjacent industry.
Who, when you begin to discuss aspects of the work...
Actually understand and are able to keep up.
I had one of those moments today...
And truly it was so refreshing.
I was speaking with someone about the work they do within stem cell research and brain rehabilitation...
Things that I am not directly involved in within my work, but which have distinct and specific ties and correlations with my work and some of the research I am involved in.
As they were discussing certain things...
I was seeing and understanding exactly where things were headed and what different aspects of the work meant...
And the consequential chains of what happens where and why...
Which brought them so much joy to see someone who just "got" it...
And when I was discussing aspects of the work I was doing...
They were absolutely with me in understanding.
Even though our work was not the same...
Aspects of what we both were working on and doing required knowledge and understanding of how these different systems impact us as humans from a psychophysiological perspective...
And seeing how their work was impactful...
And feeling understood professionally...
Was exhilarating.
It is not something I have had the pleasure of in some time...
Because so few people truly seek to push the boundaries of their industries.
Many people might go into "Linear Innovation"...
Which, in a business context, you might hear about through the Kaizen Theory...
A great theory and practice...
But a very different form of innovation from Sageship...
Which seeks out "Exponential Innovation"...
The type that completely redefines an industry or creates vastly new understandings that simply did not exist before.
To move into the realm of "Exponential Innovation" and Sageship...
Requires you to begin to become very comfortable with not having answers to questions...
Testing ideas that others are not even considering...
Working on turning theory into reality...
And risking being absolutely wrong at the end of it.
All things that most people simply do not want...
Which is absolutely alright.
Not everyone "should" seek Sageship.
There is an inherent level of risk that either is not within everyone's capacity or could jeopardize aspects of life that are more important to that individual.
I deeply respect people who "stay in their lane" for the sake of something greater, such as taking care of their family.
I also respect people who do not wish to push their industry for the sake of feeling connected with more individuals.
We live in a world that is deeply disconnected within an epidemic of loneliness...
And that can, quite literally, cause us to become sick and even die.
Seeking the path to Sageship can feel very lonely at times.
It is not for everyone.
But...
For those who do truly seek that path...
I encourage you...
To find individuals who are also Sages...
Who are deeply pushing the boundaries within their respective areas of expertise.
That feeling of being professionally understood as a Sage...
Is so incredibly powerful...
And...
Knowing individuals who understand what you do is even more powerful...
Because they may be able to provide insight and perspective on challenges you struggle to overcome.
As humans...
We are not designed to work or be alone...
We are designed to work interdependently.
Where we each work within our strengths...
But utilize our strengths together toward greater goals than each of us could attain individually.
So...
For a Sage to truly flourish...
It becomes important to find community with people who actually understand.
It is not always easy...
Especially the further outside the bounds of an industry that you push...
But they do exist in the world.
Go seek out others who professionally understand you.
