It seems like Every Year you begin to Hear a New Buzzword to Describe Certain Things in Life.
The Latest of these that have Crossed My Path...
"Quiet Cracking".
It is being Described as a "New Workplace Phenomenon".
Essentially...
It is when Employees are Coming and Doing their Job, but are Mentally and Emotionally Struggling...
To the Point that they are "Cracking" and Becoming More and More Disengaged with their Work.
They are Not "Actively Disengaged" at this Point, where Employees are Purposefully Working Against the Company...
They also are Not "Quiet Quitting", which is where the Productivity Declines are Purposeful...
But they "Are" Becoming Less Productive and Capable of Effectively Doing their Work.
According to some Reports that I recently Read...
Though, admittedly, I did Not Read the Research, nor do I Intend to for Reasons I will Discuss shortly...
Apparently, 54% of Employees are in States of "Quiet Cracking".
This, supposedly, is costing the World Economy $438 Billion in Lost Productivity.
All of this Sounds Really Bad for Businesses...
And It Is.
That I will Not Argue.
But this is Where I have My Issue with the Entirety of "Quiet Cracking"...
People are Treating this like it is Something "New" and "Different".
Wrong.
It is Just a New Buzz Word to Sugar Coat, Distract, and Disguise a Reality that We have Known about for a "Long" Time.
What is "Quiet Cracking" Distracting Us From?
Burnout.
It is that Simple.
Quiet Cracking could be easily Described as "What" Happens to People During Early-Stage Burnout...
And Burnout is a Buzz Word that Describes the Psychophysiological State of Being that Occurs due to...
Chronic Dis-Stress.
It is that Simple.
But We Use Stupid Semantics in Ways to Disguise and Distract from the Problem we Already Know Exists.
In the article I was reading, the "Expert" said, "The telltale signs of quiet cracking are very similar to burnout."
No Really, Sherlock?
That is because it "Is" a Part of Burnout.
These are "Not" Separate Phenomena.
People are Trying to Disguise and Do Not Want to Accept the Reality that Over 80% of the Workforce is Already "In" Burnout...
Yes, a Good Chunk of that Could Be Classified as "Early Stage Burnout" and/or "Quiet Cracking"...
But even "Early Stage Burnout" is Disguising the Reality that "All" Forms of Burnout are "Late Stage Chronic Dis-Stress"...
Much of which is "Caused" By Extremely Poor Leadership...
And the Failures to Create Better Leaders in the World...
Which is a Problem that We have Known about since the 70's when Leadership Development Programs Began...
And that was a Continuation of Knowing about these Problems which led to the Creation of Management Development Programs beginning in the 40's.
This is What We Need to Realize...
Stupid Semantics Do Not Solve Problems.
We are Seeing the Same Problems...
But We Are Not Resolving Any Of The Problems...
And the Problems are Simply Becoming Exacerbated to the Point of what We Call Burnout...
Which "Has" Been Recorded to be a "Literal" Cause of Death in People, even in Individuals as Young as 26 Years Old.
We Can "Break Down", "Prescribe", and "Diagnose" the Problems into Tinier and Tinier Pieces and Buzz Words until We are Blue in the Face...
But it is Not Solving Anything.
One of the Definitions of Insanity is Doing the Same Thing Over and Over Again and Expecting Different Results.
Well, Guess What...
We have been Doing the Same Things For Over 80 Years...
But Getting the Same Results.
When are We Going to Realize that We're Acting Insane?
We are Giving the Same "Solutions" to the Same Problems...
But they Have Not Been Working...
And it has Caused the Problems to Become Worse.
We can Use Semantics to Give New Names to Things We have Known About for Decades...
We can Make the Semantics Sound "Less" Terrible by Sugar Coating what is Happening...
We can Use Semantics to Distract and Disguise the Problem that We Know Exists...
But the Issue is Still there Completely Unresolved.
We Already Know from the Scientific Research on Burnout, at All Levels, that Our Productivity Potential Drops Down to 5%...
And Yes...
We have Already Known that "Worse" Forms of Burnout can Lead to Lowering the Productivity Potential Further...
And Yes...
We have Already Known that it is Possible to have "Negative Productivity" Caused by Active Disengagement and the Sheer Volume of Errors Caused by Burnout.
None of this is New.
I have been Discussing "All" of these Known Problems for Years.
The Reason that I Left the Leadership Development Industry Years Ago is that I Understood that it was Insanity.
Why Were Businesses Paying $350 Billion Dollars Per Year at the Height of Leadership Development...
To Get an 80% Complete Failure Rate...
With "Limited" Success the Remainder of the Time?
And Along With This...
We Were Also Seeing Monetary Losses from Productivity Decreases Continue to Skyrocket Exponentially.
To Make This Clear...
Businesses are Spending Hundreds of Billions of Dollars...
For "Solutions" that Do Not Work...
Causing "Further" Losses of Hundreds of Billions of Dollars.
Insanity at its Finest.
When You Combine These Over Years...
This is "Trillions" of Dollars that Businesses have Lost.
When Will We Open Our Eyes?
When Will We Begin to Stop Falling Prey to Repetition Bias and the Frequency Illusion, Hearing the Same Lies Over and Over Again?
When Will We Stop Being Sold Snake Oil by the Same Individuals Who Simply Put Different Labels on the Packaging to Distract and Confuse Us?
If We Truly want to Create a Better Future...
We Cannot Use the Same Thinking.
We Need Different Solutions.
