Written by a human, for humans, always.
I am often asked...
How?
How is it that I keep at different things that I do every day.
When I say every day...
I mean "every" day.
Specifically writing articles and running.
On weekends.
On vacations.
If I'm feeling good.
If I'm feeling awful.
I still do those.
I have run every day for over 800 days in a row...
And written and published articles every day for over 1,300 days in a row.
When many people think about the process of doing that...
It can feel daunting.
How is that even possible?
How do you go forward without motivation?
On the days where you're exhausted?
What I always say...
Is that anyone can do the things that I do.
It is within anyone's human potential.
I am not "special" when it comes to these things.
If you have been reading my articles for awhile, you have probably seen one of my recommendations...
Having minimums.
My minimum is 250 words for articles, and 1 mile for running.
But there is another thing that has allowed me to accomplish these...
Which you can also utilize to help you do more than you imagined possible.
What is it?
Having rules.
See...
When most people think about doing these types of things...
They approach it in this way...
I'm going to do it...
If...
And then they give themselves a list of reasons that they might not do that thing.
I'm going to do it...
If...
I am not sick...
I am not on vacation...
Then often they will add reasons that are very subjective with boundaries that can shift...
If I feel like it...
If my motivation is there...
If I have the time.
Each time you do this...
You create more and more reasons "not" to do something.
So...
Instead...
You create rules...
And you do not break them.
For me...
I write a 250+ word article and run 1+ miles every day.
Period.
That is the rule.
You can add other rules on top of it...
Such as I cannot go to sleep until I have done these.
Now, those two rules work for me.
They may not work for you.
The key with a rule...
Is that there are no exceptions to the rule.
The rule is the rule.
Period.
Once you make a rule...
You do not leave room for interpretation...
You do not give yourself a choice that can be made in the moment.
It does not matter if I "do not feel like it"...
Because the rule is, "I do it".
See...
When we give ourselves wiggle room...
We will find ways to nitpick and squeeze the cracks open wider and wider...
To fit what we want in the moment.
So...
Create rules that have no cracks.
No room for interpretation.
They are the rule.
Period.
The reason I am able to write an article every day...
Is because my rule is I do it.
So I sit down...
And stay with it until it is done.
The reason I am able to run every day...
Is because my rule is I do it.
So I go outside...
And I do my loop.
I do not waste time or energy on deciding whether or not to do it...
Or if I feel like it...
Or whether there is something else to do or something else that feels more important...
There is the rule that I do it.
Period.
So I do it.
When the rule is the rule, that is it.
That can sound extreme, and perhaps it is...
But it really does not "feel" extreme when you actually set the rule.
In my opinion...
It actually makes life vastly easier...
Because the rule creates a boundary that streamlines aspects of your life.
Should you do that for "everything"?
No.
But if you believe something is important for you to do...
Then streamlining it with a rule becomes a freedom...
One which, when you live it...
Allows you to accomplish so much more than you ever imagined possible.
