Defining You - Why Most People Struggle To Ever Become Themselves

Defining You - Why Most People Struggle To Ever Become Themselves

Who Do You Want To Become?

It's a question that we pose to Ourselves So Frequently.

Even as Children, we are asked what we want to do when we get older.

Astronaut.

Police Officer.

Actor.

For me, it was an Archaeologist... which is quite different than Who I am Today.

Life sometimes Changes Our Paths, and that is Alright Too.

Sometimes it is Necessary to become Adaptable to the Circumstances that Life Presents to Us.

Yet...

I still find that, often, people Struggle with this Question.

Who Do You Want To Become?

But the question becomes Why?

Why Do People Struggle?

Over the years, I have found that the Largest Challenge We Face in Answering this question is...

We Must Define Ourselves.

Yet Few Do That.

Probably because we Fail to Understand what it "Means" to Define Ourselves.

How Do You Define Yourself?

Now, as you think about this, let me take you back to my Youth.

When I was Young and I said that I wanted to become an Archaeologist...

Did that Make Me One?

No.

Obviously Not.

Why?

Well, I had Never Done Anything to Truly "Become" an Archaeologist...

Besides somehow figuring out how to Pronounce Every Dinosaur Name in Every Book I came across, Despite having a Speech Impediment - A Miracle itself.

But I Never did any of the Work to Become an Archaeologist.

I Never took Classes.

I Never Learned how to use Radar or LIDAR.

I Never Took the Time to Understand the Layout of Geography to Find where Fossils May Be Found.

I Never Kept Up to Date on the Scientific Literature of Theories for Different Dinosaurs and How they May have Lived.

At the End of the Day, I Never Did Anything to Become an Archaeologist.

Which is Important for us to Understand...

Defining Ourselves is More than "Saying" Who We Claim To Be.

It Is About "Being" Who We Claim To Be.

We Do Not Define Ourselves With Words, But With Actions.

By Becoming an Exemplar.

It is about Showing Who We Are.

This is Why So Many People, Sadly, Fail to Define Themselves.

They Do Not Do The Work Of Defining Themselves.

I've Known Many Talented Artists over the years...

Truly Talented.

Yet Few Do the Work Necessary to be Defined as an Artist.

It is Not Just about "Being Able" to Create Art.

It is about Actually Creating Art.

Constantly.

Showing that Art to the Masses.

Being at the Receiving End of Potential Criticism and Moving Forward Anyway.

It is about Developing Relationships with Individuals who own Galleries.

Creating Something of Meaning.

Doing All of this, and More, with Purpose.

I've Known Many Talented Writers over the years...

Some Much More Talented than I.

But it is Not about having the Talent to Write.

It is about Actually Writing.

Getting Others to Read Your Work.

Expressing Your Ideas on the Page and Spreading that Message.

Being Ready to Receive Dismissal of Your Ideas.

Having People Tell You That Your Ideas Make No Sense.

Then, Turning Back to the Page to Make those Ideas Clearer.

More Succinct.

Defining Yourself is about Making Choices in Your Life.

Some Choices that others may think are Crazy.

Waking Up Early to Do the Work Required to Push Your Goals Forward.

Saying No To Things When You Need to Recover to be at Your Best.

Sometimes Moving Beyond What Most Consider Logical.

At the End of All This, it is Crucial to Define Yourself Through Action.

It is about Living As You Define Yourself.

Even Before Ever Being Recognized...

You Must Live Fully As You Define Yourself.

It Is Time To Be Yourself.
